Hero and rebel

I think that a hero is an adventurer, a combatant and an exemplar. He is a great person who helps the people. A rebel is a resistant, a revolutionary and a rebellious person, who like a teenager disobeys the established rules. With these definitions we can see that hero is defined in a positive way like someone who saves lives and helps the population of a city like in the stories we usually read. On the other hand, a rebel is defined in a negative way like someone who goes against the others. They are completely opposed but some people can be both heroes and rebels like, for instance, Martin Luther King who gave freedom the black community and by doing this rebelled going against the society, who was racist but was a hero, an example of resistance against unfair laws.

Yesterday I watched the television show Friends, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Ross, Joey and Chandler live together in Manhattan (New York City). In one of the episodes there I watched, Ross and Rachel had a baby together and they want a nanny. They find a male nanny, Sandy, who is too sensitive for Ross’s comfort. In the other episode, Joey wants to speak French for a job that he will do. So, Phoebe, who speaks French, will teach him. She tries but Joey can’t get it. I think that these two episodes are the funniest that I watched, because the things that the male nanny says to Ross and Rachel are very funny, he begins to cry and there, Ross think that he’s too sensitive. The other is funny because Joey says things that don’t make any sense and thinks that he can speak French.

The book thief

I read a book called The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak. The story is told from the point of view of Death before and during the World War 2 It´s about a little girl, Liesel Meminger, and her brother who were sent away by their mother to the Hubermanns. But, her brother dies on the way to their new house. As the gravediggers are burying her brother, Liesel takes the gravedigger’s handbook, despite her inability to read. That was her first theft. She later arrives at the Hubermann’s house on Himmel Street in Molching and meets her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, who treat her well, despite Rosa’s infamous swearing. She meets a boy called Rudy Steiner who becomes her best friend. She steal a lot of books after that. During the war, her father, Hans Hubermann, takes in a Jewish refugee, Max Vandenburg, who becomes a close friend of Lisel, but the World War II is creeping closer to Himmel Street, bringing death to the area. I will not tell you the end of the story, because you have to read the book to know it.

The white Masai

One day I watched a film called The White Masai (Die Weisse Massai) .
It’s a true story of a white woman, Carola, who was in Kenia with her boyfriend on holidays. She fell in love with a Massai (indigenous African ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania) and decided to live her boyfriend to stay with her lover. There, she has to adapt to the Masai’s way of life. She also has to face the culture, her husband’s attitude towards women, and what he expects from a wife. At the end of the film, she had a child with him , but she couldn´t stand the attitudes of her husband and she returned with the child to her country.
I really liked this film because it´s a very beautiful true story and watching the film, we can learn about the culture of Kenya and of the Massai.

The Haunting in Connecticut

Last week I watched a film with my mother. It was a terror film based on a true story called “The Haunting in Connecticut“. The story is about a family who buy a house near the hospital because the son is being treated for a cancer. But this house was a funeral home. They discover a mortuary room where Matt sees a lot of supernatural events. His parents don’t believe that he is seeing phantoms in this house because the doctor said that Matt is having hallucinations because of the treatment. One day, the Matt’s mother sees the phantoms too and decides to investigate. They discover that during the 1920s, the previous owner, Doctor Aickman, conducted séances in the house, using his assistant Jonah as a medium, who convinced many skeptics of his abilities. Doctor Aickman and his guests all died during one of the séances when the ectoplasm that seeped out of Jonah’s mouth exploded into fire and incinerated everyone present, and Jonah eventually was incinerated too when he tried to escape the rage of the spirits and went missing. The people who had died in this house were stuck, imprisoned and they wanted help. The family helped these phantoms and moved places.
